As Chairman of the University of Colorado School of Medicine's Department of Dermatology. He is a world-renowned expert in cutaneous immunology and cell biology, as well as melanoma research. He has been studying cell death mechanisms in photosensitive lupus, vitiligo, and alopecia areata for 40 years, and has produced fundamental discoveries about the role of ultraviolet light in causing autoantigen translocation to the plasma membrane in keratinocytes in photosensitive lupus. His interest in immunological mechanisms in vitiligo led to years of pigment cell biology study, which finally led to investigations of melanocyte and melanoma resistance to apoptosis. Dr. Norris has been sponsored by a VA Merit Award for the past 17 years to research medication combinations that kill melanoma by overcoming anti-apoptotic defenses, particularly in melanoma beginning cells, and recently served on the NCI Director's Board of Scientific Councilors.
